CALCITE is a naturally occuring Calcium Carbonate compound used to neutralize acidic water in a potable water system. Acidic waters react with calcite causing it to slowly dissolve the calcium carbonate media to raise the pH. Using Calcite will reduce the potential leaching of copper, lead and other metals found in typical plumbing systems. Periodic backwashing will prevent packing and maintain service rates. Depending on pH, water chemistry and service flow, the Calcite bed will have to be periodically replenished as the Calcite is depleted. Calcite in neutralization application adds some hardness to the water being processed. Therefore, Calcite treatment should be applied ahead of water softening.

Applications
First Application:

Fill Calcite Media Filter with Calcite. Insect periodically and add Caltie to bring the bed back up to its original depth.

Preventative Maintenance:

Backwashing of the bed will eliminate the finest of dissolved particles, thus preventing considerable pressure loss.

General Purpose:

Calcite acts as a filter bed for turbidity, a catalyst for iron reduction, and a neutralizer for low-pH water.

Features and Benefits
Calcite will increase the pH, decrease turbidity of water, and lower the iron ppm.
Calcite will reduce the potential leaching of copper, lead and other metals found in typical plumbing systems.

Technical Information

Calcite is a near white mix with a density of 100 lbs./cubic foot.

Conditions for operation include a pH of 5-6. A backwash rate of 8-12 gallons per minute per square foot with a bed epth of 24 - 30 inches. The service flow rate should be 3-6 gallons per minute per square foot.

The rate of solubility of Calcite is dependent on several factors. In relativity mineral free water, the average rate is 0.001 percent at 77.
